ABOUT GRI

The Genetics Research Institute (GRI) is a non profit Association located in Milan Italy, and constituted under Italian law in 1998. The Institute is composed of Associates,  who elect a Directory Council,  President  and Vice President from among themselves. The Association, which functions as a legal entity with the right to make contracts, accept grants and gifts, and disburse funds to accomplish its aims, is governed by a Constitution (Statuto) approved by the Italian Ministry of Finance granting GRI non-profit status. GRI is a Small or Medium Enterprise (SME) for purposes of European Commission related funding.

PURPOSE

The GRI was founded with the purpose of performing scientific research and other efforts related to human genetics, especially in connection with chronic diseases such as cancer. An important facet of GRI's mission is the study of the interaction between genetics and environmental factors as causative agents in disease. Since the focus of GRI is on research in human genetics (as opposed to experimental model systems), there is a strong component of genetic and molecular epidemiology in GRI activities. Another area of interest is research into predictors of clinical outcome.

LEADERSHIP

Professor Emanuela Taioli, MD, Ph.D. is the President and Scientific Director of GRI.

Dr. Taioli has an MD from the University of Milan, and Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Columbia University. She was a member of the faculty at NYU Department of Environmental Medicine in New York. At the Polyclinic Hospital in Milan she served as Manager of the Molecular Epidemiology Group. In 2005 she became the Arnold Palmer Professor of Cancer PRevention, Directory of the Epidemiology and Population Sciences Programs at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and Professor of Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh.

She is currently Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Taioli has published over 220 scientific publications, recieved numerous NIH, European and other grants, and has a reputation as a leader in the field of molecular epidemiology and cancer prevention.
